How to do Ice swimming ?

Updated: Nov 2, 2021

Did you know that a naked body loses 50 per cent of its heat through the head. That is why it’s important to keep your hat on when winter bathing or Ice swimming.

In Finland and let's say nordic countries, people love to do cold swimming after their Sauna. This not only helps to relax your mind and body but also boost the immune system, and improve blood circulation. Also maybe you will not believe this but it reduces stress and help your body burn more calories throughout the day! The Finns really like their sauna time and ice swimming.

So, if you are ready to take the plunge into the Ice hole for swimming, ( or jump in the snow after Sauna ) please remember these handy tips:

  • Wait some minutes before going for cold swimming after a sauna, as going from very hot to very cold can be a big shock for your body.

  • When entering an ice hole, sit back, relax and let the water reach the top of your neck, just like you would in a bath. ( otherwise some people enter the ice hole quickly and get out quickly )

  • Remember to dress for winter. Wear footwear ( If you do not want to make your feet bleed ) a footwear that stays on in the ice hole and a hat to keep your head and ears toasty. ( Cause otherwise you will end up having frozen hair )
